What Symptoms can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture is widely accepted as one of the oldest medicinal practices in the world and for good reason. Over the last 2,500 years, acupuncture has been able to help treat a variety of symptoms with great success, allowing thousands upon thousands of people to enjoy a better standard of living. As acupuncture practices continue and more research is completed, we’re discovering more and more conditions can be treated with expert acupuncture treatments. So what symptoms can acupuncture alleviate and help?

Back Pain

As mentioned previously, acupuncture is one of the best solutions to treat lower back pain.  Acupuncture Evidence Project (McDonald J, and Janz S, 2017). Through expert acupuncture, soft tissue work, mobilisation and sometimes manipulation, pain is negated and patients found they were able to return to a higher state of mobility and function.   In fact pain from other causes ie postoperative pain, is also effectively treated with acupuncture.

Headaches and Migraines

Starting at the top of the body with headaches and migraines, acupuncture has been found to significantly reduce the overall impact of recurring events. Tension headaches are one of the most common symptoms to be treated around the world, with tens of thousands of patients being treated each month. After multiple acupuncture sessions, many patients reported a significant improvement in the pain itself, as well as a reduction in how often they were happening.  Acupuncture Evidence Project (McDonald J, and Janz S, 2017)

Indigestion

Indigestion or heart burn is another very common condition that affects a lot of people. The discomfort comes after stomach acid comes into contact with the extremely sensitive lining of the digestive system. This leads to irritation and inflammation which causes great discomfort.  Acupuncture  can be used to restore the body to a natural, stress free state, reducing the effect of heartburn.

Nausea and Vomiting

Very common during chemotherapy, post-operatively and during pregnancy – nausea and vomiting are some of the worse symptoms that can be helped with acupuncture sessions.  There is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture  for nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy sessions.  Acupuncture Evidence Project (McDonald J, and Janz S, 2017).  If a person is able to recover from chemotherapy sessions more quickly their body is in a better position to build its immune system and bloods for the next round.  I have found that this can prevent disruption of chemo sessions due to low blood counts or sickness.

Allergic Rhinitis (Hayfever)

This can present as sneezing, nasal discharge, headache, and/or nasal obstruction.  It can be season – commonly caused by pollens of grasses, flowers and trees.  Or perennial (symptoms appear more regularly) which are caused by many factor (often hard to pinpoint).  House dust and mites are common causes as are moulds and products of hydrocarbons such as traffic pollution leading to poor air quality, perfumes, sprays etc.  Animals such as cats, dogs and horses lead to reaction also.
